925 STERLING SILVER, A GUARANTEE OF QUALITY

    21 February 2022

But what is 925 Sterling Silver? In this article, we let you discover the raw material of G-Silver: a recycled, resistant and brilliant material.

    Its history…

Silver is a material that is often associated with femininity and moon goddesses. But it is above all a malleable metal. Its name comes from the Latin word “Argentum” which means “shiny”. Present since Antiquity, silver had been used in money, tools, musical instruments etc…

    And now ?

Nowadays, it is widely used in jewellery. G-Silver makes its products from recycled sterling silver, in line with our committed philosophy. Indeed, we seek to reduce our ecological impact with a metal that does not come from mines.

All our products sold on g-silver.com are guaranteed to be 925/1000 sterling silver jewellery that respects the quality standards imposed by the European directives, regulation (EC) n.1907/2006 known as the REACH regulation, which prohibits the use of nickel in the manufacture of sterling silver articles

925 : The guarantee of quality

Silver is a soft, malleable material, highly prized by designers for its purity and quality. It is a precious metal, shiny, the whitest of all metals. This is why there is 925 sterling silver which is harder and more resistant, it corresponds to 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other metals, generally copper… Copper allows the metal to keep its durability without affecting its beautiful silver colour

    Precious metal obligations

G-Silver is a wholesaler and manufacturer of sterling silver, which is why we respect the obligations related to precious metals. Therefore, all our sales, purchases, receipts and deliveries of precious metals follow the applicable laws.

But how to recognise sterling silver?

In order to identify a precious metal, the customs authorities affix a guarantee stamp to guarantee which metal it is. This stamp is mandatory on all jewellery weighing 30 grams or more. This is why it is rare to find silver jewellery with a guarantee mark.

In order to recognise that the metal is sterling silver, a touchstone and acid test must be carried out. The aim is that the trace generated does not disappear after the inspection. If the trace disappears, it is not sterling silver.

We can also see the quality of silver by long-term inspection: oxidation.

If the jewellery does not oxidise over time, it is either not sterling silver or there is something covering the surface of the sterling silver.

Other types of silver exist, for example:

    – 999 silver which is “pure” silver, used in the alloying of sterling silver.

    – 800 silver which contains 80% pure silver and 20% copper.

    Taking care of it

To avoid oxidation, do not leave the jewellery in contact with water and remove it whenever you use chemicals.

If the sterling silver jewellery starts to tarnish, a soft cloth or fine gauze should be used to restore its shine. We have made an article “Taking care of silver jewellery” on this subject if you want to know more about cleaning it. Rhodium plating is also a way to protect the jewellery from oxidation and to prevent the metal from turning black. On our website we offer rhodium plating on most of our items
