Dans le domaine des bijoux, les pierres font partie de ces pièces d’exception qui suscitent un engouement et un enthousiasme sans égal.
The name “gemstone”, officially repealed by law in January 2002, is a historical name which applies to the four gems of diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald. A gem is distinguished by its hardness, colour, lustre, rarity and generally by its sparkling beauty. These exceptional stones are historically classified according to 3 categories:
- Precious stones
- Ornamental stones, also called semi-precious or semi-fine stones
- Organic stones
All gemstones are used in jewellery. They represent an important part of luxury jewellery around the world.
Semi-precious stones are made up of all the other stones used in jewellery. They come in all colours and are very vibrant and luminous, which allows them to make a significant contribution to the jewellery world.
Semi-precious stones were not used until the Iron Age, their hardness prevented them from being pierced. But it was not until the discovery of the technique to melt metals in order to crimp them. From this time, these stones fascinate and have become an object of covetousness.
The use of semi-precious stones was first introduced by Cartier in the 1940s, but it was only since the 1980s that these stones have been widely used by other great jewellers.
Fine stones are more numerous, and we can count among them stones such as quartz, chalcedony, topaz, amethyst …
