Sterling silver is a shiny white metal that oxidises, tarnishes and blackens naturally on contact with air, moisture, perspiration, etc. on the surface of the material. This is a natural phenomenon, a guarantee of the quality of the product and proof that it contains pure silver.
We have therefore written this article to give you the best advice on how to care for your sterling silver jewellery.
Wear the jewellery: You can prevent jewellery from tarnishing simply by wearing it regularly. The natural oils on the skin will “clean” the silver and keep it shiny.
Avoid contact: Contact with certain household products, perspiration, chlorinated water, or any substance containing sulphur (e.g., mayonnaise, egg, mustard, onion, wool, etc.) will cause corrosion and tarnishing. Therefore, it is best to remove silver jewellery when cleaning. Direct exposure to the sun will also cause tarnishing of silver, so be careful and remove your jewellery when sunbathing or going to the beach.
Creams and lotions, cosmetics, hairdressing products and perfumes are also “enemies” of silver and tarnish silver more quickly. It is therefore advisable to put your jewellery on last, as a final touch!
Storage: Since air tarnishes silver, it is a good idea to store jewellery in sealed bags with anti-tarnish seal. However, care should be taken not to store more than one piece of jewellery in the same bag: silver is a soft metal and some jewellery can scratch one another. It is also preferable that necklaces and bracelets are kept unhooked to avoid scratching. If you can’t use individual pouches, keep your jewellery box in a place with low humidity.
At G-Silver, we offer techniques to enhance the quality and shine of our sterling silver jewellery.
Anti-tarnish is a production process that puts a protection on the surface of the silver to extend the shelf life of the product. It is anti-allergic and non-toxic. This process is intended to help silver jewellery last longer. Although anti-tarnish extends the life of silver by 2-3 times, it does not guarantee that the silver will not oxidise.
At G-Silver, all sterling silver jewellery and findings are anti-allergic (nickel-free), with anti-tarnish protection (passivation treatment). They are therefore already treated to protect the silver.
At G-Silver we also offer a treatment, which is galvanisation, also known as rhodium plating. This is a technique that treats the surface of the silver and slows down the tarnishing and oxidation of the silver.
Rhodium is a precious metal which has the property of protecting silver from the chemical agents responsible for its discolouration, namely the sulphur compounds present in the air and on the skin. Rhodium-plated silver jewellery does not tarnish, does not discolour and has a deep shine
