    1 May 2026

In the jewellery world, it has become a necessity to combine durability, affordability and aesthetic appeal. Gold Filled makes a statement today as a leading solution for professionals who wish to offer high-quality jewellery without compromise.

    What is Gold Filled?

Gold Filled 14K is a technique that consists of mechanically assembling a thick layer of gold on a brass base.

Contrary to gold plating, the layer of gold represents roughly 5% of the total weight of the product, which guarantees an excellent durability and a strong resistance to wear and tear.

    The advantages of Gold Filled

    • A very close aspect to solid gold
    • Excellent resistance to friction
    • Long-lasting brilliance
    • Ideal for everyday wear

Gold Filled is thus a strategic choice for offering gold jewellery that is elegant, reliable and affordable.

Why should you choose Gold Filled?

For creators, brands and displays, Gold Filled allows you to:

    • Strengthen the durability of collections
    • Reduce returns due to wear and tear
    • Offer a premium alternative to gold plating
    • Optimise value for money

Gold Filled has now established itself as an essential standard for professionals seeking a durable, high-quality solution.

    FAQ

    Is Gold Filled genuine gold?

Yes, it contains a real gold layer between 12K and 14K.

What is the difference compared to fine gold plating?

In Gold Filled the quantity of gold is much higher, which makes it much more resistant and durable.

    Can Gold Filled wear down?

Yes, but much more slowly than fine gold plating. With proper care, it can last for many years.

In gold filled, what is the average thickness of a layer of gold?

Contrary to gold plating, (1-3 microns), gold filled isn’t really measured in microns, but in terms of mass percentage. The norm is a minimum of 5% gold (often 1/20 of the total weight). This corresponds to a layer about 50-100 times thicker than gold plating.

    Peut-on choisir d’autres teintes ?

Non, le gold filled existe principalement en jaune (14K ou 12K)
    Les teintes dépendent de l’alliage d’or utilisé (10K, 12K, 14K…).

    Are other colours available?

Yes, Gold Filled is available in 18K yellow gold, but it can also be made in a rose gold or champagne gold finish, depending on your requirements.

Can Gold Filled be polished or reworked?

    Yes, with certain precautions.
Polishing must be done gently to preserve the gold layer. Polishing that is too vigorous could thin down and alter the product’s finish

Quelles sont les recommandations d’entretien à communiquer aux clients ?

Les recommandations à faire sont les suivantes :

    • Nettoyer avec chiffon doux
    • Ranger à l’abri de l’humidité
    • Nettoyage doux eau + savon

    À éviter :

    • Parfum / crème directe
    • Eau chlorée / mer
    • Sport / frottements répétés
    • Dormir avec le bijou

Même si le gold filled est résistant, ces gestes prolongent fortement la durée de vie

    Can Gold-Filled products be soldered?

Soldering is not recommended for Gold-Filled products.
Heat can damage the gold layer, cause discolouration or turn the item black.

What clients need to know about care recommendations

To preserve the shine and durability of the jewellery piece, it is advisable to gently clean it with a soft cloth, with lukewarm water and gentle soap if necessary. Furthermore, it should be kept out of humidity when it is not being worn.

To preserve the gold layer, direct contact with perfume or creams should be avoided, as well as exposure to water containing chlorine or salt water. Repetitive friction, physical exercise and sleeping while wearing the jewellery piece are also not recommended.

Though gold filled is resistant, these steps greatly prolong its lifespan.

Are there certifications and/or technical data available?

Gold filled does not have an official certification or a specific standard. For more technical information, you can see the diagram in our blog article that explains the composition of Gold Filled.
